Singapore Dreaming -vvz

Singapore Dreaming is the latest movie from Colin Goh and Woo Yen Yen. I've read somewhere that the inspiration from the movie came from the responses to an essay Colin Goh wrote in 2001 about the 5Cs. That's probably one of the reasons why I think many Singaporeans will be able to relate to the characters in the movie.

I like this movie for a variety of reasons. While the 5Cs is a main theme, it is handled more subtly than a Jack Neo movie. The characters are well developed and engage the audience. There are also many memorable lines which I shall not quote so as not to spoil it for people who haven't watched it yet. Last but not least, the cast is made up of experienced, solid actors who are convincing in their roles. According to the production notes on the website, Yeo Yann Yann hit her screen-husband Lim Yu-Beng so hard that he was left with handprint bruises on his chest for several days. Now that's hardcore acting.

The soundtrack is primarily different variations of a Hokkien song. My mother says that the melody is from a popular tune back in the days when I didn't exist. In any case, I quite like the song even though I don't know Hokkien. The soundtrack is downloadable at the movie's website.

This movie gets Yiheng's stamp of approval and I recommend it to everyone who is a Singaporean. Oh, people who are thinking of signing up with the army because it pays well should watch it too.
